One of the key criteria for winning WETA sites is uniqueness.
Our judges review a lot of sites and many, 'same as sites', score badly here and end up toward the bottom of the heap. Here's one that scored highly for its different approach toward promoting its tourism product. The informal style of the website reflected in its 'ponderosa' style type faces and, most noticably, its cartoon horses, works extremely well to promote the ranch's horse treks. It's not that the product is 'that' unique, (although I'm sure the site's owners will argue this point). What really works is the fun approach. Although the style is informal, the quality of the illustration and design are extremely high and, no corners have been cut. Whilst there are numerous anim gifs (which can look rather tacky on some sites), the effect is very subtle here and not dogged by poor anti-aliasing or any other problems caused by hasty image creation/manipulation. It is also good to see a statement that rates have been quoted in $NZ and that provisions have been made for currency conversion from the rates page. It would be nice not to have to keep drawing attention to this on other sites but it IS important. |
